Candle Care 101

Candle Care 101

If you love candles as much as we do, you've probably asked yourself how to get the most out of your candle. As candle lovers we want to get every last bit of yummy fragrance out of our candles.  Proper candle care is a simple way to maximize the life of your candle.

Step 1.
The first step is an easy yet crucial one: trim your wick!  Before you light your candle, trim the wick to 1/4 - 1/8 of an inch. Trimming the wick helps the candle burn properly and maximize how the fragrance carries in your home. A wick of that length allows for full combustion of the fuel (wax) which minimizes the carbon build up, one of the factors that creates soot. You can use regular scissors or clippers and we love specially made wick trimmers which aide in accessing the wick as it burns lower into the container. Make sure the top of the candle is free of debris.
Step 2.
Did you know that wax has memory?  The first time you light your candle, you are training the wax on how to burn and it will carry this memory throughout it's life. A full melt pool is the best melt pool and is achievable by allowing your candle to burn from wall to wall of the container on it's first burn. This may take 3-4 hours to achieve, so be sure to give yourself enough time.  We like to open a bottle of wine and invite a few friends over for a catch up, allowing the fragrance to enhance the moment.
Step 3.
Always burn your candle on a heat resistant surface away from drafts, frisky pets and never leave them unattended.  If you're worried about an open flame in your home, check out our reed diffusers and wax melts.
Once your candle has melted to 1/2 " of wax, it has come to an end. Our recycled glass jars are great to re-use! You may use hot, soapy water to clean out your jar and give it a third life, only limited by your imagination.
Ignite your glow!
